One of my favorite educational quotes is from John Lubbok and reads as follows-"The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn." I believe that for some students that wish to learn can be ignited when technology is integrated in a classroom. For me this was evident in my student, Scotty, who had a very low self esteem and was not motivated or very interested in writing. I knew this young man was an avid reader of comics and his number one activity was playing Super Mario! If only I could find a way for him to feel comfortable with sharing his thoughts and ideas through writing-- I knew Scotty had plenty to share! In comes the technology piece. The students were given an assignment by the science teacher to write an essay describing Abiotic and Biotic Factors. I suggested to the teacher we give the students an option of completing this assignment using an online comic generator and he agreed. As I did a brief introduction to the online comic generator I saw a spark in Scotty's eyes and the next day he arrived to class with his assignment completed! He recieved a B+ and more importantly I believe he also recieved his wish to learn. I say this because his attitude changed, he began completing "regular" assignments, he believed in himself! I am proud to report that he is now in college and doing quite well. Oh yeah, he wants to be a History Teacher!
Your assignment is to share a story of a student that you had/have who found his/her wish to learn while in your class-- preferrably due to the integration of technology.
Assignment #1- January 8, 2011 This assignment will be due by January 22, 2011.
1. Please join the wiki. As a member of the wiki you will be able to share information with your colleagues. To join the wiki please send a request by clicking on the join button found at the top right side of the wiki page.
2. As part of your first assignment we will be creating a Digital Book of Characters using Google Presentations!! To do this you will:
Use the Avatar page on this wiki (Left side) to find links to several avatar sites. Use one of these avatar websites to create your favorite character from a book you have read. When creating your avatar character remember it should be based on character traits described in the book.
Save your avatar character-- remember where you saved it on your computer- so you can insert it on your Google Page!
Navigate to the Google Presentation page, find your name on one of the pages- this is the page you will add information to.
Insert your image on your page and then please write who the character is, from what book (include the author) and write a brief explanation of why your avatar looks like he/she does-- be as specific as you can.
On the bottom of your page please take care to give credit to the avatar site you used.
When your page is complete, or if you have to leave your page before it is finished please make sure you click on the SAVE button! If you do not all of your work will be lost.
Click here to navigate to the Google Presentation- GOOD LUCK!! Just as an FYI- when working with Google Docs it is best if you use the Google Chrome or FireFox Browsers. QUESTION
3. Please answer the following question using the discussion feature at the top of this page and respond to at least two posted responses.
Over the last few years there have been several school districts who have initiated programs that give laptops to every student. The state of Maine began giving every 7th and 8th grade student in the state a laptop in 2002. Last year they expanded the program to include high school students. Here is a link to an article highlighting this initiative. Sue Gendron, Maine's State Education Commissioner, states, “Our young people really are digital natives. We don’t want them to unplug when they come to school.’’
Keeping in mind that technology is not what drives learning but simply what mediates and supports the process please answer the following question: As a classroom teacher what would you see as some of the challenges and positive outcomes with initiating such a program for your students?
